About this wine
JIM BARRY WINES The Armagh Shiraz, Clare Valley
The authentic and beautifully-concentrated Classifed The Armagh Shiraz, is a powerfully-compressed wine that explodes with aroma and flavour. Intense, plush and generous, the oak is hidden behind curtains of deep, ripe, intense fruit and extraordinarily fine, structured tannins.
The vineyard is hand-harvested, with several passes, to achieve optimum ripeness and flavour profile. Vinification takes place in two-tonne, open-top fermenters with heading-down boards. Regular rack-and-return and pump-overs take place to optimise extraction of colour and flavour; in some vintages post-ferment maceration may be an option. At completion of fermentation the wine is pressed off and matured in a combination of new and old French and American oak hogsheads for 13 to 19 months.

Deep but bright purple-crimson; a deeply-woven bouquet of blackberry, blackcurrant and plum flows through into the rich, multi-layered palate; while oak and ripe tannins are also plentiful, the balance and harmony of the wine mean it is not the least ponderous. A 30-year life is conservative. 97 points, Wine Companion.

Rich, dense fruit, but freshness too – is that a glimmer of red fruit? Well I never. Cinnamon and vanilla – high quality oak. Blackberry and blackcurrant with a floral edge to it. Super fine tannin, sure length, some restraint here, but so young it feels like a barrel sample. Very fine wine. Such good tannin. Mouth perfume. Elegance. 96-97 points, Wine Front.

Deep, dark red/purple hue; bouquet of espresso coffee, toasty barrels, mocha and smoke. Lashings of oak! The palate is full-bodied and dense, concentrated, rich and powerful, but also nicely balanced and neatly crafted. No hint of overripeness here. Lovely wine. Long, long carry. Drink 2015-2043. 96 points, Real Review (10/2015).
Very deep, dense, dark purple colour, highly saturated. Massively intense black fruit and aniseed aromas of great intensity and concentration. Powerful, lingering, still a baby and somewhat unformed. Tannins are very ample and strong, but not tough. It will be excellent in a few years. Tremendous length. Acidity is lovely. Even at this early stage, oak is not prominent. Excellent wine, and very long-term. Drink 2016-2040. 96 points, Real Review (5/2013).

…flaunts a gorgeous aromatic red and black fruit core intermingled with clove, chocolate box, and eucalyptus aromas that are still very primary… It has a really fine palate that is very elegant yet powerful. With vibrant acid, firm and very fine tannins, the flavours are rich and layered with spices coming through on the long finish. Drink from 2015 to 2030+ 99+ points, Wine Advocate.

The 2010 Shiraz The Armagh was bottled 50% under stelvin and 50% under cork. This bottle is Stelvin. It is tight, amazing and fresh! It has all the pastrami and peppercorn, but it has light and freshness too. This is impossibly fresh and delicious. What a vineyard. There is a stylistic shift here, moving from barriques to hogsheads, more French oak. It has 14.6% alcohol and was matured for 14 months in 67% French and 33% American 330-liter hogsheads, 70% new oak and 30% one year old. So good. This is alive.

Jim Barry is best known for its flagship Shiraz The Armagh, but also produces an impressive range of wines including Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon from their vineyard holdings in the Clare Valley and Coonawarra.
