Established in 1995 Kooyong Winery is located on a gentle-sloping 93 hectare property adjoining the Devilbend Nature Reserve “where the wild fowl gather.” This northern end of the Mornington Peninsula is generally drier and warmer than the south. The vertically positioned vines are anchored in meaner light sandy clay soils. About 30 hectares of the property is planted to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. The cane-pruned vineyard is divided up into sections.
The highly intuitive graduate in biological sciences and applied winemaking, Sandro Mosele – something of a local superstar – has focused on individual vineyard parcels. The philosophy is to preserve the vineyard characters exhibited by the fruit. The Chardonnays are whole bunch pressed and barrel fermented; the Estate, Faultline and Farrago wines see up to 30% new oak. The easy drinking Clonale Chardonnay will only see roughly 10-15% new oak. The Estate Pinot Noir, Haven, Meres and Ferrous Pinot Noirs all special vineyard selections based on site specific character are made in typical Burgundian fashion and aged in a combination of 30% new and seasoned French oak for 18 months. The rather good Massale Pinot Noir is only matured in oak for 12 months before release. Kooyong also makes a more than half decent Pinot Gris.
The main point about Kooyong is that it is a pace-setter. Mosele has imagination and flair. The wines express the nuances of domain and overall laissez faire philosophy. His wines are really worth seeking out. At some point it may find itself in the mainstream of the secondary wine market.
