About this wine
Le Méal Blanc, liquid gold Hermitage
From one of Chapoutier’s superlative sélections parcellaires in the Northern Rhône comes the Ermitage Le Méal Blanc. Le Méal sits at a reasonably high elevation, with chalk and alluvial gravelly soil that births wines with great aroma and elegance. Composed of 100% destemmed Marsanne, fruit is harvested at full ripeness. It is floral and honeyed on the nose. It can be drunk young, but patience will reward. In old French, ‘Le Méal’ translates to ‘the best’. Here, it is a fitting nomenclature.

"My pick of the Chapoutier litter, this has excelled in 2016. Focused, lemon and lime-peel aromas, as well as peaches, apple blossom and wet stones. The palate offers a scintillatingly intense and concentrated array of citrus and stone fruit. Full of power and very long with great acidity. A real thrill. From organically grown grapes. Barrel sample."

"Vivid gold. Powerful, mineral-tinged Meyer lemon, nectarine and pear nectar scents show excellent clarity and complicating honey, fennel and smoky lees accents. Vibrant and expansive in the mouth, offering deeply concentrated orchard and pit fruit flavors along with suggestions of buttered toast and honeydew melon that build on the back half. Shows impressive energy and finishes silky and extremely long, featuring lingering floral and honey nuances."

"Barrel sample. Yields 26 hl/ha. Le Méal is often the richest Hermitage. In 2016 the cold spring allowed finesse.
Mid gold. Very rich and broad, from the warmest section of Hermitage. Lots of concentration even though hail was least here. There is certainly tension."

"A two hectare plot of 50+ year old vines on a steep south facing slope of alluvial deposits and large stones. Deep gold in colour, this is fresh with a lifted apricot aroma. It's very full and opulent in the mouth, almost too full - a point that's emphasised by blocking malo. This is distinctly bright, refreshing yet powerful, with mineral notes and a saline finish. It has real relief and detail of texture despite its rich, flowing body. A wonderful wine, but be aware of the low acidity this year."

"Similarly colored, the 2016 Ermitage Le Méal Blanc comes from a warmer terroir of pebbly and more loess soils and was brought up in 10% new demi-muids. It's a bigger, richer wine than the de l’Orée and boasts rocking notes of honeyed citrus, orange marmalade, baking spices, and licorice. Rich, powerful, and layered on the palate, it's another rocking white from this team that will drink nicely for two decades or more."

The 2016 Ermitage le Meal Blanc is all Marsanne and all power, with ample weight and richness on the full-bodied palate. Grilled melon and tangerine flavors are big, bold and round yet balanced by a hint of bitterness on the finish. It should drink well for two decades or more.

M.Chapoutier
M. Chapoutier is a renowned producer in the northern Rhône valley, producing a diverse array of benchmark wines from the region’s most prestigious appellations. The Chapoutier family has roots in the region dating from 1808; however it is under the current leadership of winemaker Michel Chapoutier that quality at the estate has soared. Since taking over the family firm, Michel Chapoutier has overseen the dramatic transformation of the estate’s vineyards to biodynamic practices. Winemaking philosophy has also changed significantly with a more sensitive oak regime now in place to allow the wine’s character to show through. The wines are also bottled unfined and unfiltered. M.Chapoutier is famous both for the "téte de cuvées" wines from old vine vineyards including La Mordorée and Hermitage La Pavillon and its range of rare Sélections Parcellaires; celebrated single-vineyard wines from the Northern Rhone’s most site, the Hill of Hermitage.
