About this wine

Mount Mary Pinot Noir is typified by fragrant strawberry, cherry aromas and a supple evenly proportioned palate. The Pinot Noir vines were originally sourced from Western Victoria in 1971. This material was "acquired before individual clonal selections were considered". A visiting French ampelographer once told Dr. John Middleton his original Pinot block comprised over 30 different clones. A selection of the best performing vinestock has been used for further plantings, although the vineyard size remains Liliputian. A relatively short seven-to-ten day fermentation on skins in open stainless steel fermenters takes place without colds soaks or post-ferment macerations. This is followed by 18 months barrel maturation in 20% new French oak barriques and seasoned oak.

ABOUT THE WINERY
Mount Mary
Mount Mary commands an almost mythical status among wine collectors. The property was first purchased by the late Dr.John Middleton in 1971. The original vineyard was planted in 1972. Dr. John Middleton always preferred subtlety and elegance in his wines. He was something of a maverick and pioneering spirit. Today Mount Mary remains in family hands. David Middleton, a zoologist and vet, shares with his father "a great love of nature and a great disdain for authority and bureaucracy". The way of doing things is unchanged, beyond a genuine desire to improve and build on past successes. Most famous for their red Cabernet blend Quintet, Mount Mary also produces a Bordeaux Blanc blend called Triolet, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. All of the wines are noted for their elegance and highly individual character.
