About this wine
OPUS ONE Cabernet Blend, Napa Valley
The story of Opus One begins in 1970 in a Hawaiian hotel bar when Baron Philippe de Rothschild (of Château Mouton Rothschild) and legendary winemaker Robert Mondavi met for the very first time. Setting out to marry the best of the old world to the new, Opus One was born in 1978.
Cabernet Sauvignon is the dominant grape here, with Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a sliver of Malbec doing more than making up numbers. This richly layered wine boasts a juicy but well-balanced palate that serves up intense aromas of dark berries and cassis. Smooth tannins and fresh acidity make for a persistent, pleasing finish.

…tastes like it was made yesterday, not 16 years ago… opulent, racy… the 1997 literally explodes from the glass. Juicy dark red cherries, menthol, tobacco and licorice all make an appearance as the 1997 opens up over time. Readers holding the 1997 are in for a thrill. Even though the growing season was defined by hot weather, a short maturation cycle and a large crop, the wine turned out beautifully. In 1997 the blend is 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, 4% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot. 95 points, Vinous (6/2013).

A rich, decidedly earthy style of Opus, showing currant, anise, black cherry, mineral, leather and sage flavours that are focused and complex. 94 points, James Laube (11/2000).

Very vigorous crimson. Looks exceptionally healthy. Still quite a 'buried' bouquet. Big and bold and sweet on the palate delivering lots of pleasure. Quite powerful but at least there is fruit on the front palate to compensate for lots of very fine tannins at the end. 18/20 jancisrobinson.com (8/2007).

Slightly sauvage aromas of cassis, dark chocolate, meat, leather and black pepper. Stylish and sweet, with moderately dense, creamy flavours of raspberry, roast meat and tobacco. Rather sophisticated texture for California wine… the middle palate grew increasingly silky with extended aeration. International Wine Cellar (6/2001)
Founded in 1978 as a joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton-Rothschild in Bordeaux and Robert Mondavi in the Napa Valley. The wine was formerly called napamedoc, the wine and the winery were named Opus One in 1982. 1979 was the first vintage, released in 1984.
The Opus One vineyards are made up of four parcels. Two sit in the western portion of the American Viticultural Area, or AVA, of Oakville–a subregion of Napa Valley. Two of the parcels—totalling 100 acres—are situated in the storied vineyard of To-Kalon, meaning ‘the place of highest beauty. There are two more parcels—Ballestra and River—that add up to 70 acres.
