ORLANDO ABRIGO Meruzzano, Barbaresco DOCG 2019 Bottle
About this wine
Orlando Abrigo Meruzzano Barbaresco DOCG
Ruby red in colour with an elegant bouquet of sweet and sour cherries. Well-balanced with good acidity, this wine will age nicely, but is also ready to consume upon release.
The fruit for this Barbaresco (100% Nebbiolo) is sourced from the Meruzzano Me. GA (Italian equivalent of a French Cru) is the second largest cru in the Barbaresco growing area. The vineyards are between 15 and 25 years old, and produce a wine which is fresh and fruity right from the outset, with tannins that are fine and immediately noble.

Treiso is a municipality in the Province of Cuneo, Piedmont. Orlando Abrigo began growing and selling grapes in the market at Alba. He began winemaking and produced his first vintage of Barbaresco in 1973. The DOCG would later be recognised in 1981. Giovanni Abrigo, Orlando’s son, joined the winery in 1986 and took over two years later. We’re proud to import the wines of Orland Abrigo which walk a tightrope of modernity and tradition, generosity and grace.
Delving deeper into the world of Italian wine, a term you’ll become familiar with is Me.Ga or Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive. This is the Italian equivalent of a cru in Burgundy.
Azienda Orlando Abrigo has two Me.Ga holdings in Meruzzano and Montersino. They are located in an area with the highest elevation in the municipality of Treiso. The south-facing vineyards are planted on white soils, rich in limestone. The steep slopes are scored by deep gullies that resist mechanised harvesting as though insisting they be tended by hand.
Orlando Abrigo’s DOCG Barbaresco wines are the result of the separate vinification and ageing of each single parcel within the Me.Ga and the subsequent selection of only the best parcels. You can access the Meruzzano, Montersino and the Rongalio Riserva, only produced in extraordinary years.
