About this wine

Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, 2nd wine of Château Margaux, Margaux

The second wine of Chateau Margaux came about partly due to misfortune - when an attack of phylloxera decimated the vineyards, necessitating a replanting of the majority of their vineyards. The lack of grapes eliminated the possibility of a First Growth Quality wine and led to the production of their “second wine” - the Pavillon Rouge de Chateau Margaux, the first official vintage of which was released in 1906.

Renowned as a sterling example of a second wine, the 2016 has been hailed as a particularly superb vintage. Medium-bodied, silky, intense and tannic, it continues its impressive trajectory year upon year.

ABOUT THE WINERY
Chateau Margaux
Château Margaux is a renowned 1er Cru Classé (first growth) estate in Bordeaux. With its roots reaching back beyond the 16th Century, the property is steeped in history. Originally known as "La Mothe de Margaux" the name of the estate has evolved over the centuries. In 1705, the London Gazette advertised the first auction of Bordeaux’s top estates, featuring 230 barrels of ‘Margose’. When Thomas Jefferson ordered the great 1784 vintage, he listed it at the top of the Bordeaux hierarchy. Its exalted reputation was further ratified by its designation as a 1er Cru Classé estate in the 1855 Classification. In 1978 Château Margaux was acquired by the Mentzelopoulos family and since then under the winemaking leadership of Paul Pontallier, its quality and reputation has soared to even greater heights. Château Margaux has 82 hectares under vine, of which 75% of the holding is Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% is Merlot complemented by small plantings of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Alongside the Grand Vin, Ch. Margaux also makes a second wine called Pavillon Rouge. The estate also produces a white wine made entirely from Sauvignon Blanc called Pavillon Blanc.
