RIESLINGFREAK No.14 Riesling, Clare Valley 2023 Bottle
About this wine
Rieslingfreak No. 14 Riesling Clare Valley
Rieslingfreak is the magnum opus of winemaker and Riesling devotee John Hughes. No. 14 captures the expertise and passion of Hughes, in an expression hailing from one of Australia’s spiritual homes of Riesling, Watervale.
Fruit is machine harvested in the coolest part of the night to best preserve that near supernatural purity. Grapes are then crushed and pressed. The resulting juice is inoculated with neutral yeast to best express terroir, before cool fermentation until dry.
From Watervale, in the heart of the Clare Valley, this vibrant bottling comes from the spiritual Australian home of riesling, crafted by the hands of a master. It is abundant with that bracing, tip-of-the toes mineral crispness so enticing riesling acolytes, perched pleasurably on the dry, rich and elegant end of the spectrum. And oh, those aromatics! Prepare yourself for a bloom of pink lady apple, white florals, citrus and thyme. Bright sherbety acid skips across a palate of apple and pink grapefruit leading to an impressively lingering finish.

Rieslingfreak was founded by winemaker John Hughes.
The inaugural vintage was 2009 with a single vineyard Clare Valley Riesling. After that, the Rieslingfreak portfolio expanded to include the Eden Valley and Polish Hill River regions, showing dry, off-dry, Kabinett, sparkling and fortified styles. Each wine is given a number to denote region and style.
‘Our philosophy is to represent the hallmarks of a single region…’
John Hughes, Rieslingfreak
In 2016, John was a Young Gun of Wine finalist. He followed that with a clean sweep of the 2017 Royal Sydney Wine Show, winning five trophies–including Best in Show, the first time a Riesling had taken the gong since 2003. After a lifetime in the vineyard and eight years of graft, John Hughes became an overnight success. John is now considered to be amongst the great Riesling makers in Australia, taking the wine to new audiences and raising the standard for the industry.
