About this wine
Seppelt St Peters Great Western Vineyards Shiraz, Grampians
With a pedigree dating back more than 50 years, Seppelt’s flagship Shiraz has long been among Australia’s finest and most sought-after red wines. That good bottles from the 1960s can still be good drinking is a tribute to the influence of Colin Preece—one of Australia’s greatest winemakers, who was the manager at Seppelt Great Western from 1932 until his retirement in 1963.
St.Peters has maintained its status as a leading Shiraz in the powerful yet elegant, finely structured Victorian style.
'a leading Shiraz in the powerful yet elegant, finely structured Victorian style.'
Winemaker Adam Carnaby points to a complex, perfumed nose of violets, dark fruit, pepper and spice leading into fresh, mulberry-like fruit flavours, fine tannins and spicy oak.
St.Peter’s proven longevity means the wine is sought after everywhere in the world that fine Shiraz is valued and enjoyed.

Huon Hooke
With a deep, dark purple-tinged colour, this classic Great Western Shiraz has a rich ironstone, pepper, spice aroma with graphite and dark-plum nuances. It’s full-bodied and tightly-composed, savoury and earthy/mineral with tremendous intensity and drive. Yes, it’s superb now but it will richly reward cellaring. Screwcap. Ageing: 20+ years.

Deep, dark red with good purple tints, the bouquet rich in ironstone, smoky graphite and spicy/peppery shiraz nuances. The palate is soft and rich and fleshy, very much a savoury wine which is driven by pepper spice and earthy, ironstone nuances. Full-bodied but also supple and finely-textured. Serious shiraz.

"Small batch winemaking, open-fermented and hand-plunged, matured in French oak of various sizes. The mix of silk and satin provides exceptional texture, black fruits dominant, the length excellent, the balance a point."

"Fantastic wine, no two ways about it.
It’s not a big wine. It doesn’t need to be. It shows off pepper, plum, clove and graphite characters and it threads woodsmoke and cured meat characters throughout. It’s fresh but settled; it’s balanced on a pinhead. It comes sheeted with ultra-fine tannin and exquisite length. It takes time to open properly in the glass and that, of course, isn’t a bad thing. This can be cellared with confidence."

"The aromas are very satisfying with tar, cloves, dark berries and a hint of bay leaf. Medium to full body. Tight and chewy tannins, but always in check and focus. Some almond and spice, too."
