About this wine
ST HALLETT Old Block Shiraz, Barossa
The Old Block Shiraz displays vibrancy, elegance and concentration. Originally from the St Hallett Old Block vineyard, the Old Block Shiraz was first made by Robert O’Callaghan and Stuart Blackwell in 1980. All fruit for Old Block Shiraz must be sourced from vineyards planted on their rootstock and be over 50 years old. Parcels are harvested and fermented separately based on their unique character. Before blending, the wine is pressed off skins and transferred directly to French oak hogsheads and puncheons. Each barrel was assessed for balance and flavour to determine the ideal blend, creating a refined, harmonious wine.

Huon Hooke
Dark and deep in the glass. Aromas of satsuma plum, black cherry, dark chocolate, coffee, cedar and spice. Full-bodied, rich, dark and mouth-filling. Mulberry, boysenberry, mocha, aromatic sweet spice and layered oak. Textured and mouth-coating tannins, bright acidity, plenty of grip and cut. A sleeper.

Inky, plush, silky number with a little muddy grip to finish. Dark berries, plum, cola and chocolate, woody spice, nougat and new leather to sniff and sip on. Such great texture, huge concentration but also a lift and freshness in feel too. A Serious Shiraz here. Complexity to sink one’s teeth into. Maybe just a bit underpowered though? Feels just that little bit diffuse. Anyway, a darn good deep and heady red.

Plenty of spice here, this shows the cooler vintage stamp, with aromas of chocolate, ripe red and dark berries, as well as violets, blueberries and cedar. The palate has ample, fleshy shape and delivers ripe red-plum and blackberry flavors. There’s a concise feel to the precise and fresh finish. A more elegant and approachable edition of Old Block.

The Lindner Family established St Hallett in the heart of the Barossa Valley near Tanunda in 1944. After a relatively sleepy beginning producing fortified wines, the winery restructured its ownership. The rumbustious pioneering energy of Barossa legend Bob McLean during the 1980s and 1990s saw an extraordinary metamorphosis. Stuart Blackwell, St Hallett’s winemaker since 1972 oversaw the development of Langton's Classified 'Excellent' St Hallet Old Block Shiraz, perhaps one of the most successful ultra-fine Barossa Shirazes and an early cult-type wine. Alongside Old Block, St Hallett makes a range of wines that consistently over-deliver including the classic reserve style Blackwell Shiraz.
