XANADU Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Margaret River 2020 Bottle
About this wine
Xanadu Reserve Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon
Only made in exceptional years, the 2017 was the first Reserve Cabernet since 2014 and it was an immediate hit at wine shows around the country, being awarded 95 points and above at Royal Melbourne, Sydney Royal, Royal Adelaide, the Wine Show of WA and the Margaret River Wine Show over the last two years.
A blend of 95% Cabernet and 5% Petit Verdot, this is fermented in both static and open fermenters and plunged daily before being gently pressed off into French barriques (45% new) for 14 months. The result is a wine with classic blackberry and cherry, and cedar aromas that lead onto the palate which is both concentrated yet elegant with very fine persistent tannins providing the backbone to a wine that can be enjoyed now but will be even better in another five to ten years plus.

Huon Hooke
Deep, bright and youthful red-purple colour; the bouquet is essence of cabernet—cassis, violet and mulberry leap from the glass, a hint of nori, while oak treatment is subtle and has been well suited to the style of fruit. Full body, ample soft/fine tannins and superior length. An impressive mouthful of fair dinkum cabernet.

There have been some wonderful 2020 cabernets from Margaret River but none better than this. What a glorious statement of the region and a great vintage. Highly perfumed aromas of mulberry, dark chocolate and blackcurrant with a little plum and dried herb edging in. The palate is full-bodied with immense power. Black fruit, dark plum and some wild berry action with oak that has been almost lyrically laid. Bright and vital with a lithe expressiveness that is pure joy.

Decanter
Perfumed, displaying lovely aromas of crunchy red fruits, mulberries, gentle mocha and cedar, with a whiff of sea spray and liquorice. Pulpy fleshy texture on the palate, with loads of ripe tannins. Long mineral finish.

What’s the point of writing anything about this wine? Really. But you’ve come this far so I’ll add the reason: It’s complete, exceptional and beguiling. The best Margaret River cabernet exemplifies those alluring characters. OK, you want to know more. It’s heady with mulberries, cassis and damson plum, wakame and squid ink. Medium bodied, plush and velvety across the palate thanks to sublime tannins with an outrageously long finish. This is irresistible.

XANADU
John Lagan and family established Xanadu in the 1977 naming the property after Samuel Coleridge’s epic Kubla Khan or a Vision in a Dream. During the mid-1980s and 1990s Xanadu created a strong following for its muscular but energetic wines. After a brief interlude as a public company, it is now once more in private hands as part of the Rathbone Wine group. The Rathbone family has instigated a complete revitalisation of vineyard and wine making practise including lowering yields and optimising regional nuance. The 85 ha property is farmed along low input/organic lines and winemaking follows a minimal-intervention philosophy. Under winemaker Glenn Goodall, Xanadu is enjoying a major renaissance.
